Frequently Asked Questions

  • I have existing hardwood floors in my home and would like to add more rooms to match. Is this possible?

If your existing hardwood floor was installed, sanded, and finished on-site, then there is a good chance we can get a very close match. If you have a factory finished AKA, a pre-finished floor, it’s still possible depending on the specifics of your flooring. The best thing to do is to talk to us about this and send a couple of pictures. We’ll be glad to have a look and get back to you.

  • Do we need to vacate our home during the sanding and finishing process?

In most cases, you will need to vacate due to wet finish and fumes, typically between 2-4 days.

  • Does the new hardwood flooring material need to acclimate in my home before it’s installed?

Yes, Hardwood flooring comes kiln dried from the flooring mill and needs to be delivered at least 1-week prior to installation. Having your new flooring delivered to acclimate gives it the chance to adapt to the humidity levels of your home, minimizing the normal contraction and expansion that occurs with a natural product.

  • How long do we need to wait until we put furniture and area rugs down after our floors are done.

It depends on the finish that’s used but generally speaking, 3-days for furniture and 2-weeks to 30 days for area rugs while allowing the finish to cure fully.

  • What product should I use to clean my new floors.

It depends on the type of finish that was used. The most common finishes used in the field are a solvent-based Swedish Finish or a water-based urethane finished. There are a couple of products that are compatible with these finishes, and we'll be happy to recommend the best ones for your floors.

  • What are the best performing hardwood species to consider? We have a high traffic household?

Most wood species such as Red or White Oak, Maple, Hickory, Brazilian Cherry, and others perform very well, even in high traffic kitchens. Other popular wood species such as Fir, American Walnut, Pine, and others, while beautiful, are better suited for lower-traffic spaces in the home.

  • I see some gaps between the boards on my floors. Is this normal?

Because hardwood flooring is a product of nature, contraction, and expansion during the various seasons of the year can cause your floors to develop some gapping, {particularly during the heating season} when the air is very dry in the home because of running your heating system. In most cases, normal seasonal movement will correct itself during the spring and summer months.

  • We have a concrete slab for our subfloor; can we still have real hardwood floors installed?

In most cases, yes. There are many high-quality engineered floors, both pre-finished and site finished, that are recommended for installation over concrete.

  • I want to have my hardwood floors refinished, but there are areas the squeak. Can you fix this?

If there are a couple of boards that are moving, causing the squeak, then in some cases, we can address this. The reality is, most squeaks in hardwood floors are related to the subfloor underneath the hardwood flexing on the floor joist. This is a much more invasive repair and not always a viable option.

  • I’m concerned that our house will be a dust nightmare when you’re finished. How do you address this?

While nothing in our industry is 100% dustless, we use dust extraction equipment on our sanding machines and go to great lengths to hang plastic to protect all areas of your home. We also wipe down the horizontal surfaces so when you return, you're not coming home to a dust nightmare. We’ve been doing this a long time and know-how to keep any airborne dust to a bare minimum. These most important steps are clearly addressed under “dust control” on every estimate we provide.

  • How do I choose the right stain color for my floor?

Choosing the right color for your hardwood floor is one of the most important decisions you'll make. During your consultation we will bring sample colors.

From those, we recommend choosing a few  you're interested in. Once your project starts we will do samples directly on your floor. This is by far more acurate than looking at random sample pieces or trying to pick a color in a showroom. Your floor is unique and may accept the stain differently than an offsite sample. Make sure to check out the "Stain Samples" tab on the site to see how we do it!
